Will removing the varnish from these chairs be a nightmare? And what should I use?

I have just been given a set of dining chairs and a table...they are all of dark varnished wood...which I hate....my house is quirky, vintage and modern with a twist...so I want to strip the chairs nd table and paint them in cream, yellow and pink paint....or maybe lilac, green and yellow...not sure....the table will be cream....please dont tell me to leave them as they are UGLY and not antiques so I am not destroying them.

Should I use Nitromorse? WIll I need LOADS of it to strip thm back? I dont have a belt sander...and want to keep costs low...paint is expensive enough....the thought of hand sanding them all fills me with horror!]
Is there anything I can cot them with so I can paint them without stripping?

Also what paint is best for hardwearing durability please? MANY thanks!

Rough them up really well with a sanding sponge. Prime with an oil-based primer and tape off and spray paint them.

Take off anything loose with sandpaper, then prime a couple times and paint. For durability put on a poly top coat, ask the person in your home improvement store for a polyurethane that works well with the paint.

You do not need to strip the chairs. if you ever do, professional strippers have a large container to place the chairs into that will strip the whole chair as it is submerged. Buy your self a couple of flexible sponge type sanding pads. they come with two different grits on each one. You can easily bend the sanding pad around the spindles if necessary. You can spray paint them with aerosol cans of oil base paint if you so desire. do it slowly, do not be in a rush, or you may end up with a few, hard to correct runs.

You don't need to strip the old finish, just wash with TSP and give a light sanding and paint away. I do suggest using a good primer and then your finish color.
