Was in a 'Babies 'R' Us' tonight. They had about ten very similar sorts of high chairs.
All were awful as far as the design went; certainly nobody would buy a piece of real dining-room furniture that looked like that.
But, even more puzzling -- they were all padded, and padded with stuff that never would've come clean with a quick wipe; it was hard to imagine how something could be set up to get more gross. even the trays had all manner of unnecessary grooves &c that'd trap food and be hard to clean.
There wasn't a plain one with a plain tray in sight.
Who buys these parent-torturing devices??
With our first, we bought one of the ones that you described. with our second, we bought a collapsable one that you affix to a regular dining chair. Totally easy to keep clean and the one year old can smear anything he wants and it's so much easier clean up.Plus, he's actually sitting at the table with the rest of the family. I wish they had thought of these earlier.
They are seriously UGLY, aren't they?!! Do they think that because we got knocked up that knocked our design taste right out? like there's only room for either a baby OR good taste? *EYEROLL*
We got one of the Fisher Price chairs, but I ended up taking off the padding entirely. not only do I like the way it looks now--more streamlined and sleek, but that stupid padding was disgusting with all the food it trapped.
I wish I could afford the swanky modern high chairs, but we were on a budget and my MIL got me this one. I'll make do, but the chair was unattractive.
Also, those attached toys? What's the deal with THAT? like I need something distracting the baby from eating.
So, my advice is to get the cheapest Fisher Price, I think they actually come with a plainer tray, and take off the padding. Way better. not awesome, but not AS ugly as before.
Do you have an IKEA near you? We didn't have one when we got the high chair, but I was walking through IKEA the other day and their high chairs are cute.
Agreed! All highchaors on the market today are hideous! This one

would be dreamy to have, no crevices to vaccum out (and still soak the spaghetti sacue out of) no pads to wash, too bad its $400...maybe one day childrens products will be designed by intelligent, experienced mothers.
They get bought because they look nice with the decor of the house LOL. In reality the cheap straight leg plastic high chair from Walmart has been the best for us. We took off the plastic pad so we can sell the chair later and it will look almost new still
You're right. They suck. Had one myself. hated it. I checked out local second hand stores and found an old school high chair that looked strikingly like one my mom used for my brother when he was an infant(circa 1981). Vinyle cushions, only a little lip around the tray. Metal legs and frame. loved it. Daughter didn't mind it either. Cleaned like a charm!!!!
There are people that think the more expensive the chairs are the better even if they are awful. my experience is that they should be plain, if you can get a wooden high chair it's perfect, it will match with anything you have in your house. Easier to clean, inexpensive and they grow with the children.
Why are so many popular high chairs so god-awful? No, really.?
