What kind of fabric is good to recover my dining room chairs?

I have 5 year old twins and my dining room chairs got dirty! I want to recover them! what kind of fabric is good to do this that is good with kids? should I put plastic over it? Someone told me to use a waterproof shower curtain and use that as a chair cover. Is that a good idea? I never did this before! has anyone ever done their chairs? How do you do it? Ant tips or good ideas? what kind of fabric to use?Do I have to buy special kind of fabric? I don't want to spend alot of money! I have 8 chairs! Can I buy it at WALMART? they sell fabric there?
