Our house has a family room, a dining room and a "formal living room". We don't dine, entertain and host, so I think the formal living room is a waste of space to fill with "nice" furniture, china cabinets, etc. the tv/sofa will be in the family room. What can we use the formal living room for? it is too big for an office, I am not interested in the pool table/air hockey idea. Any other suggestions?
How about a combined interests room, you know, a place for each member of the family to have their items neatly together, to reduce any clutter in the bedrooms;
Maybe a media room, for all of the DVDs, CDs, books, posters, stereo equipment, some big ol' comfy chairs;
A music room, if anyone plays musical instruments and all the accompanying gear;
Craft/Art studio;
PC/Technology room;
Until you decide, maybe you could get some inexpensive but nice looking patio (wicker, rattan) furniture and have a quiet place to read.
It is hard to say without really knowing your family. could you use a play room? a man cave? a home theater room? You said it was too big for an office, but what about an office/library, with a lot of bookcases and comfy seating? it really all depends on your family's lifestyle.
What else can we use a formal living room for? Already have a family room.?
