What colour should I paint my livingroom?

I want to paint my living/dining room. I have two couches - one is cream and one is chocolate brown. My wood furniture is dark brown. My area rug is a checkerboard of cream/terra cotta/navy/dark brown/denim blue.
I have a large window at one end with cream coloured drapes.
What do you guys think for a paint colour? I am not afraid of using colour and I am not rreally crazy about just using white or beige.

I would paint it a light sage and my reasoning is -- this will pickup the cream, chocolate, terracotta, all rug colors and blend to accent the furniture. You will see how it brings out all colors. this would be an exciting color to work with. Of course, I have all white sofas, with cherry furniture and painted my L.R. Linen with print window treatments, including the sage color and it is beautiful. nevertheless, I would go with the sage or even a light terracotta, then use the abstract artwork around and liven up the color, but accenting your furniture. Also, a Desert beige would look great as trimwork. Bring out new sofa pillow colors to match.

I would do a really pale blue like Steam from Benjamin Moore or light green, you could do an accent wall with Java also from Benjamin Moore as well, great colors!

A very pale soft yellow would be pretty

I just love turquoise blue with both cream and chocolate brown.

I did something very differetn with the browns recently - I painted the walls of my living room a warm bold yellow (the color of a buttercup). as accents colors, I threw in caramel and cranberry - looks great.

Why worry about dated? If you like the sky blue- and yes, that does go beautifully with chocolate and beige- go for it!

I think a dark blue - though not quite Navy -would look great on the walls. Then you could use some rust accents.

Hope this helps.

Blue is a relatively timeless color. it depends on how blue-blue it is. Pottery Barn has some great color selections out right now. Very warm, rich, many neutrals. they are some of my favorites, so I'm probably bias.

My previous home has a color from Behr called "brown tepee" Every time someone stepped into my home for the first time they would comment on how homey it was and how much they liked the color. You might consider looking into a neutral sort of brown that would go with the cream and brown in your furniture.

Good luck! The nice thing about paint is that if you try it and don't like it, it's easy to change.

Try Sherwin Williams as well. they will send 8.5 x 11 samples of paint colors that you can tape on the wall to see if you like them and if the colors change too much during the day.

It's hard to determine not actually seeing your room, but judging from the colors you already have, I would focus on one color and bring that out in the walls.

Depending on how much terra cotta is in the area rug, you could go with that in the whole room. Or, just do one focus wall in the dark brown.

if you use a light color the room will stand out in the sun and will not look as dark as a closet when the sun is not shinning. i would use a cream color like beige or soft pink, with a light brown color trim around all the door and window frames to get the place in set with your furniture.

What about matching the terra cotta? If you decide to go light, go with the cream color to match your drapes.

a somewhat lighter color version of any of the colors you named will be pretty on the wall- like a lighter shade of terracotta or the dark brown
