My husband and I have planned on painting our dining room red for quite some time. now we are finally getting ready to move in to our house and are actually starting to look at furniture. We found leather chairs that we love but they are plum colored. The table we are looking at is really dark (almost looks black if the light isn't shining on it). You can see the chairs here http://www.roomstogo.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=showItem&ipac_id=17144 What color wall paint would look best? Red ok? or definitely not?
Thanks,
Wow...bet those are great! You can use blue with purple, or even a light sage color of green...red is really contrasting and you might get very tired of it. I would pick maybe pale blue and then pick up the purple and some other accent with the blue in pillows, or drapes or curtains, etc. also gold in frames or silver or chrome will go well, so pick on of those and then use it ....that might depend on the style of the whole room....like chrome is more modern....and can be used with other accent pieces.
Also tablecloths or centerpieces on the table will also pick up the colors you want...since the table is dark...have that dark color part of the scheme as well.
I would think hard before painting red with plum (will have to assume this to be a dark purple because the link was not of purple chairs). your rooms can look like a dungeon with everything so dark..I would think about a tuscan yellow ... something not too dark or too light... choosing a similar colour to this in a mid range hue. use the deep red for accent colours in your art/centerpieces/glass bowl or vases/flowers.
I would paint the walls a beautiful gray. Do more accents with black, plum and gray. and then pick out a metal that you like and make the place shine a bit. (light fixture, candlesticks, chargers, curtain rods).
Red would look good, but will make the room look smaller. Maybe if you did it a beige, with a red accent wall. your call ultimately, but if you use all the dark colors, your room will look very tiny.
USE THE FURNITURE AND FITTINGS TO ADD COLOR TO THE ROOM NOT THE WALL COLORS
ITS EASY TO CHANGE THE ROOM COLOR IN THE FUTURE IF YOU KEEP THE WALLS LIGHT AND NATURAL COLORS.
I think it would be OK as long as you pick a red with purple undertones. Don't use an orangy-red. Painting every wall red may be dark overload. Pick a wall or two to paint and the other walls a soft neutral.
What color walls will match purple leather chairs?
