I'm moving into a very small house with a 13x10 living room and 13x10 dining room. it is a bungalow ranch style home and has a very dark brown Berber carpet in both rooms.
I would definitely go with a lighter color on the walls. While you could go with a standard color like a light taupe or cream, you could also be more creative.
Do you have accent pillows for your dark brown furniture? if so, choose a color from your accent pillows and go with a lighter value of the same color for your walls.
you need to add light mate brown so that you can add some highlights on the colors
pale color i.e off white or cream then use color in your accessories i.e cushions, curtains especially in small rooms
a soft sand color would look nice.
paint the wall dark green or maybe a blackish color to make it a forest color

If the room is small, you should paint the walls a light color-it will make it appear brighter and larger.
Choose a shade of cream, blue, green, pink- whatever you like. Paint the walls that color. buy some throw pillows that match the shade on the walls to throw on the furniture.
You can also find something that incorporates the colors of the furniture and wall- artwork, for instance, and use that to bring out other colors by using the other colors in the form of a lampshade, carpet, curtains, etc.
