How should you furnish a home that has an open floorplan?

We are buying a beautiful home that I love. I'm just really confused on how we should decorate. The kitchen, dining room and living room are all open to each other. The kitchen cabinets are a medium-blonde wood, but my hubby and I would prefer a darker wood for our furniture. would this look okay, or should we find something that matches the kitchen better? Also, should we try to match the wood pieces in our living room to the dining room set as well? thank you so much for you help, any advice would be appreciated!

If you have an eat-in area in your kitchen, I suggest that table/chair set be a closer match to the kitchen cabinets (or slightly darker) but other than that, I think it's more important to go with what you like rather than adhere to any specific rules. If you are purchasing new furniture, I would try to keep the dining furniture in similar wood and the living room things in similar wood, but the two rooms don't need to match. That would give each room an individual identity but since the floorplan is open, I would try to use one or two colors in each room; pillow in the living room coordinates with placemats in dining room coordinates with throw rug in the kitchen, something like that.

For large upholstered pieces, I recommend neutral colors; trendy colors can become dated and are easy to get tired of (in my experience) Bring color in with accessories, pictures, throws, etc.

Have fun!

Woods of all shades usually go well together. I would go with the dark wood living room. I also have a very open floorplan and my woods are all different shades.
Personally, I would try to match in similar tones in the living in dining room to create a harmony, but change the fabric colors. Reds and browns. Reds and plums. The color possibilities are infinite! I like neutral tones to balance out wood and then a pop of color with accent pillows, curtains and accessories!
