Anyone have any clever ideas, as to what I can do with broken cane backs in my dining room chairs?

I bought them in 1971, so they have lasted a long time.
At six dollars a hole, it just costs too much to have them recaned. is there any way I could put padded backs in the chairs. I need a good idea from someone who has had this problem.
